METAL ADDITIVE CENTER
Future, research and innovation

The Center was established thanks to a regional grant that enabled the development of research infrastructure and the realization of initial projects leading to the opening of activities for businesses. The center has developed and validated a Design For Additive Manufacturing (DFAM) methodology to provide expertise, equipment, and innovative design solutions to companies in the automotive industry, and beyond. The center focuses on integrating process modeling and simulation tools that allow the design of an automotive component using AM technology with the same level of reliability as designing a component manufactured using traditional technology (casting and mechanical processing)

ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES

Development and production of components to be manufactured using Additive Manufacturing

Industrialization of components to be manufactured using Additive Manufacturing

Laboratory activities for material and process characterization and development

Training on DFAM (Design For Additive Manufacturing) and the use of tools for Additive Manufacturing

DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN OF COMPONENTS TO BE REALIZED IN AM

Complete development of components to be manufactured in metallic AM. Starting from the component specifications, the Metal Additive Center designs the part, applying all the best practices of “design for Additive Manufacturing”:

  • Product simulation tools
  • AM process simulation software
  • Topological optimization tools

The development is completed with the production of prototype components accompanied by functional tests and checks for project validation.

INDUSTRIALIZATION OF COMPONENTS TO BE MANUFACTURED IN AM

The service is offered to customers who are already familiar with Additive Manufacturing technology but require support for optimizing the printing process for industrialization, particularly in terms of process repeatability and costs. The customer provides the component model (which may already be designed for AM), and on this model, the center’s design workflow is applied, mainly focusing on studying and optimizing the printing process, using process simulation tools.

MATERIAL AND PROCESS CHARACTERIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Service of material characterization and testing of metal powders, usable for printing tests (on the type of machines available in the laboratory or at third-party facilities). The service aims to offer third-party customers the opportunity to test new materials for AM and printing processes. The service is completed with non-destructive, metallurgical, and metrological inspections on the printing tests.

TRAINING ON DFAM (Design For Additive Manufacturing) AND ON THE USE OF TOOLS FOR AM

Technical training service on Design for Additive Manufacturing and the use of tools. The service is offered to designers, technicians, and companies who wish to learn about DFAM and additive tools.

The center was established
thanks to the contribution
of the Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund
(POR FESR 2014-2020 – Regional Settlement and Business Development Agreements in implementation of Article 6 of Regional Law No. 14/2014)
